The ANZAC's

Yesterday we installed these crosses from the The Fields of Remembrance Trust. The Trust's objective is for communities across New Zealand to create Fields of Remembrance to honour those in their community who served and died in World War I.

The people named on our crosses come from our region - they all died in service for our country. Also included are a nurse, and heroes who won the Victoria Cross and died in battle, Sergeant Dave Gallaher, captain of the All Blacks, was killed at Passchendaele. Private Basil Mercer was the youngest to be killed.  He was just 17 years old.

There are many more soldiers from our area who fought.  Their names can be found on town memorials and Rolls of Honour in schools, halls, RSAs and churches.
